Surrounding Area

Excellent days out and things to do are all within an easy drive from The Byre.

On the coast there are numerous villages and beaches to explore with some excellent bars and restaurants.  Walkers, cyclists, golfers and anglers have plenty to keep them occupied too.

Chatton from the air

Chatton is a picturesque village with a local village store stocking local produce, take away food & drink and all your everyday essentials.   The Percy Arms is your local pub offering some home-made Northumbrian favourites with outside seating available throughout the year.  Both the shop and the pub are less than 5 minutes walk from The Byre.

Six or seven minutes drive away is the friendly small market town of Wooler (known locally as Glendale; the inspiration for ‘Postman Pat’s, Greendale’). Here you should also visit Ad Gefrin which is a recently opened Anglo-Saxon Museum and Whisky & Gin Distillery.

Explore Northumberland

Bamburgh is renowned for its majestic fortress and beautiful expanse of golden, sandy beach and is only 11 miles east.

The elegant walled Georgian town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which straddles the salmon rich River Tweed, and the cobbled, market town of Alnwick, protected by its dramatic castle, both offer a wide array of amenities around half an hour’s drive away.

Attractions

Alnwick Garden is a popular visitor attraction to see the Grand Cascade Waterfall and dine in the restaurant within the largest tree house in Europe!

Cragside is a grade 1 listed country house built into a rocky hillside, and the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power.

There are beautiful castles to explore at Alnwick, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh.

Activities

Just outside Chatton is Chatton Trout Fishery with 4 fishing lakes (no rod licence necessary). A few miles away you get to Wooler, the base for hill walkers at the foot of the Cheviot Hills.

There are many golf courses in the area. Bamburgh offers spectacular views, Goswick is a top ranked course and here are some lovely courses at Seahouses, Dunstanburgh, Foxton, Wooler and Coldstream.
